All you Need to Know About Laptop Batteries

Author: James Kara Murat

Laptop batteries allow you to work on your computer even while you’re on the go. Whenever you need to access information from your computer, a battery will grant you the ability to be efficient in whatever you do. However, a battery can only do so much. A lot of people find that their battery lives shorten as time goes by eventually causing their notebooks to run slower than usual.

While a laptop battery’s deterioration is inevitable, there are many ways by which you can help prolong the life of your battery. Understanding how it works and what can make your battery “age” faster is one of them. The technicalities surrounding a laptop battery do not really take rocket science smarts to understand.

Lithium ion

If you have a later model laptop, you’ll probably find your battery is a Lithium ion or LiON. This is a type of battery that is common to newer notebooks because it’s relatively lighter than its predecessors. It’s also much more efficient and production costs are minimal which is why manufacturers have managed to introduce this to the market.

For those who are searching for a replacement battery, you’re better off with LiON. Not only is it more environment-friendly, it is also has a longer runtime.

Memory effect

You may encounter this term on older types of laptop batteries such as the nickel cadmium and nickel metal hybrid. The memory effect basically causes a battery to hold less charge. Lesser charge means lesser energy. For your laptop, that means lesser runtime. It usually happens when you tend to leave your battery plugged onto the charger long after it has been fully charged. Conversely, it also caused by undercharging and charging before the battery is fully drained.

Shallow cycling

Shallow cycling is when you charge your laptop battery without allowing it to reach full charge status. While there are instances when this cannot be avoided, it’s always best to allow for ample time for your battery to charge up before disconnecting it from the charger. Shallow cycling leads to the rapid deterioration of your battery’s ability to hold charges. It is one of the primary causes of memory effect which was discussed above.

Cycle life

Laptop batteries have a finite lifespan. Over time, their efficiency and storage capacity are diminished which can affect your unit’s overall performance. Cycle life refers to the number of charge and discharge cycles before your battery starts to deteriorate. On the average, rechargeable batteries can go from 500 to 1200 cycles before their nominal capacity goes below 80% of its initial capacity.

The Birth and History of Color Laser Printers

Author: James Kara Murat

Before color laser printers took over the market of computer peripherals, dot matrix printers were the first in its place. These printers required a ribbon that was needed to be changed and in those times proved to be not very dependable.

Dot matrix printers are small type of printers and some of them are still in use today; these printers were regarded as “impact” type. This type of printer works by using 9 small pins which can be more or less, the number of pins will depend on the required quality. The pins which are arranged vertically are used to print by striking against the ribbon just like a typewriter on a platen paper. Across the page the print head will move sideways so that by sequential types on the right pins a desired character will be formed. Dot matrix printers can print right to left or vice versa. The effect of dot matrix printer is rather similar to a digital clock and its segments.

The time came when changing ribbons became a struggle for people in need of the service of printers. It was in 1984 when the first inkjet printer was introduced in the market. The inkjet printer came with ink printer cartridges which were very convenient for everyone and colors are much easier to change, since then these types became fairly common. From the matrix of the inkjet printer, prints are formed at the speed of one line at a time. Inkjet printers are capable of producing high quality printed graphics. But the downsides of these printers are high maintenance cost for ink cartridge replacements and the dependence of its continuous use to the environment. Nevertheless, the vast majority of today’s consumers are in choice of inkjet printer technology.

The birth of laser printers grew and became widely used in the 80’s. This type of printer allows texts and graphics to be printed one page at a time in high quality standard. With laser printer, a complete page image is transferred to a photosensitive band or drums and from a laser beamed buffer data is scanned as the band or drum turns. By using separate sets of toners and drums color is made possible as well as availability of different sizes of paper.

Color laser printers are type of laser printers that add colored toner especially in printed graphics in three additional passes or steps. The order of the colored toner is cyan, magenta, yellow and key color which is the color black. It is also known for it’s acronym as CMYK and often referred to as the “four color” or the “process color”. CMYK which is subtractive color model that is used to describe the process of printing that is especially used in color printing. There are types of color laser printers that use a large belt that is capable of accommodating a full sheet of paper to generate colored printed images. Among other types of printers, color laser printers are the finest in terms of speed and quality of its printed text and images, but unlike inkjet printers, are way too expensive to common public consumers.

The Mythology of Data Governance and Data Stewardship

Author: Maneet Puri

It will sound almost a cliché if you say that companies thrive on information. If you go through the front page of any news paper, watch any weather channel, come across a press conference, or go over any annual report, you will witness how data dominates the organizations today. The importance has grown so large that companies have to scour for data of the previous years to ascertain their business efficiency. From marketing department to the operation department, organizations rely on the data of every segment to make smart predictions, store historical records, and read the consumer behavior.

The volume of data grows with the augmentation of customer information. Moreover, the amount of data captured at a particular point of time multiplies every second year. Packaged applications are the norms of the present world and external data is an indispensably important component of every organization. However, old tactics and processes have given way for new ones when it comes to managing data. While the boardrooms get abuzz with the vociferous discussions on data among the executives, companies wake up to the realities of upgrading their data management processes and systems

This quest for advanced data management has given rise to the concept of data stewardship and data governance. However, the chaos and confusion over the roles between business and Information Technology continues to take place. Customer data integration (CDI) and master data management (MDM) are two important initiatives which promise to relieve business experts from the labor of defining and maintaining customer data.

The Dilemma of Data Governance
If anything has been most misused in business, it is the phrase of data governance. IT organizations have always been trying to deploy data governance to engage the business in legitimate ownership discussions. Ironically, vendors use this phrase to convey data management practices from modeling to quality automations. Worse still, even the term has been used synonymously for knowledge management and CRM. Even the IT executives mistake data stewardship with data governance.
However, data stewardship and data governance are two different concepts. Data governance is different from data stewardship in a way that it implies a level of organizational supervision that encompasses not only business but also information and technology. Moreover, it also comprises executives who desire to be a part of or are engaged with defining their companies’ policies. While they handle the internal and external regulations in one hand, they implement the customer-focused strategies on the other. Data Governance can be best defined as the mechanisms and decision-marking structures for treating data as one asset, implementing formal policies and administering the management of corporate data.

The process of data governance itself is dependant on the executive committee which institutes the policies, sort out conflicts and questions, consider customer commitments and evaluates success. Many companies that lack the processes or skills to manage their data deploy this too early in their systems. However, unless and until there is any legitimate data management and stewardship take hold, data governance will remain just a matter of discussion.
